Yoga is often associated with physical postures or asanas, however this is only one aspect of Yoga. The literal translation of yoga, being a Sanskrit word, means ‚union‘ or ‚communion‘. Yoga ultimately having the  goal of uniting the Incarnated Soul (Jivatma) with the Higher Soul (Paramatma). The Indian sage Patanjali synthesised the path of Yoga in his work called the Yoga Sutras. Here Patanjai outlined what he calls the 8 limbs or stages of yoga, the path leading the seeker into communion with their higher nature, leading to the union of the Jivatma with the Paramatma.

These 8 stages being:

  1. Yama (ethics, what one should strive to do)
  2. Niyama (self-purification, what one should strive to avoid doing)
  3. Asana (phyical exercises or postures)
  4. Pranayama (breathing exercises or controlling the breath)
  5. Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses)
  6. Dharana (concentration)
  7. Dhyana (meditation or prolonged awareness)
  8. Samadhi (union with one's higher self)

Rather than just focusing on the physical postures, my yoga classes also consist of Pranayama, inner reflection, stillness, concentration and meditation. Yoga sessions where the senses are turned inwards, where your feet are firmly on the ground and hands reaching to the sky, where you arrive in the now, full of life and renewed awareness.
